Watching the trailer reminds me of when I started cycle off road back in the late seventies. Like most kids back then I loved BMX. I was lucky, we had a great track in our village just behind our house, one field over.
The village was Powick, near Malvern. The track was a huge (or so it seemed to my young eyes) dirt construction with berms, wooden bridges and jumps. As you can tell health and safety wasn't such a big issue back then.
I used to spend all my free time there. Riding my Ultra Burner, kited out in my full race kit. I had an orange helmet.
Just a few hundred yards from the BMX track was a large area of woodland criss crossed with paths and streams. That's where I started mountain Biking. Not on a mountain bike, but on what would now be considered a 'Klunker'. My road bike fitted with 'cow horn' bars, knobbly tires and ten gears.
Then in 1983 I had my first Mountain Bike. A gray Raleigh Maverick (online the launch date is mentioned as 1985 However I have photos of my Maverick bought from my local bike shop in Worcester, by 1985 I had been back in Devon for 12 months).
Ten years old with the Malvern Hills beckoning. Now that was fun.
